Topics include: Treatments and Understanding

While CAR T-cell therapy has shown to be effective in select patient groups with blood-related cancers, can the immunotherapy apply to solid tumor cancers as well? Patient Power founder Andrew Schorr is joined by leading expert Dr. David Maloney, from the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, to discuss advances in CAR-T research, treatment efficacy for multiple disease areas and potential obstacles for solid tumors. What we're really trying to do is try and expand it from CLL, lymphoma to other diseases such as multiple myeloma where this seems to be very active.  And now we're trying to do this in solid cancers, lung cancer, breast cancer, things like that.  That affects many more patients, right?  And so if we could get advances there that would even be—it would be important as well.

We struggle in the solid cancers, but we're trying.  And I have some active clinical trials in lung cancer and breast cancer using a variety of T cells that have been modified to try to attack the cancer. We're going to get there, but the obstacles are much higher.  There's tumor barriers, and getting the cells into the tumor, it's an inhospitable environment.  We're going to probably have to manipulate them further to get them in there to go after the cancer.  But I think we can do it.
