Attending PsychiatristMemorial Sloan Kettering Cancer CenterDr. Andrew Roth is currently an Attending Psychiatrist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. He graduated from New York Medical College in 1988 and completed his Residency in Psychiatry at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. He completed a two year fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine and Psycho-Oncology at Memorial in 1994.
Dr. Roth is Board Certified in Psychosomatic Medicine and Geriatric Psychiatry. He has been the Psychiatry liaison to the Genitourinary Medical Oncology Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering for the last 22 years and has been the Training Director of the Memorial Sloan Kettering/New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell ACGME accredited Fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine/Psycho-Oncology for the last nine years. He has received numerous awards including the Outstanding Education and Training Award from the American Psychosocial Oncology Society and The Noemi Fisman Award for Lifetime Clinical Excellence in 2015 from the International Psycho-Oncology Society at the World Congress of Psycho-Oncology.
Dr. Roth’s research includes the development of the Distress Thermometer, which was adopted and adapted by the National Cancer Center Network’s Distress Management Guidelines Panel, evolving into one of the main tools used worldwide for distress screening in cancer settings; the creation of the Memorial Anxiety Scale for Prostate Cancer; a National Cancer Institute funded trial of treatment for fatigue in men with prostate cancer; and most recently designing a geriatric specific psychotherapy for older cancer patients.
He has published extensively on various topics in Psycho-Oncology and is a co-editor of the newly released Geriatric Psycho-Oncology: A Quick Reference on the Psychosocial Dimensions of Cancer Symptom Management from Oxford University Press. Oxford recently published his successful book for the lay public called "Managing Prostate Cancer: A Guide for Living Better."
