Maintenance Therapy

Maintenance therapy isn’t generally used in AML. However, if you have a particular type of AML, known as acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL), you may be offered further treatment.

If your leukaemia has responded well to treatment with ATRA, an oral drug that is similar to vitamin A, you may benefit from further treatment with the same drug for 1 to 2 years following your initial treatment.

Maintenance therapy is given over the longer term to help ensure that any leukaemia cells present following induction and consolidation therapy are destroyed, in order to minimise the risk of relapse.
