Andrew Schorr

Andrew Schorr
Patient Power Co-Founder and President
Host, Two-Time Cancer Survivor and Patient Advocate

Andrew Schorr is a medical journalist who was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in 1996 and has remained in remission since then. In 2011, he was diagnosed with a second cancer, myelofibrosis, and an oral medicine has allowed him to lead a full life. He is the founder of HealthTalk.com, PatientPower.info and PatientPower.eu. Andrew is the board chair of the Patient Empowerment Foundation based in Switzerland. He is also the author of the acclaimed book, The Web-Savvy Patient: An Insider's Guide to Navigating the Internet When Facing Medical Crisis, published in 2011. Andrew has two journalism degrees, an undergraduate from UNC-Chapel Hill and a master's degree from Columbia University.

Esther Schorr is the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Patient Power, a skilled global project manager, and has worked with her spouse, Andrew, on patient and family education projects for more than 30 years. She has supported him in his cancer journey since diagnosis in Seattle in April 1996. Esther is passionate about empowering "care partners" and is a strong believer that education leads to empowerment and better care. Esther has an undergraduate degree in communications and an MBA, both from UCLA.

Susan Wisowaty

Susan Wisowaty
Chief Technology Officer

As Patient Power’s Chief Technology Officer, Susan Wisowaty leads our strategic technical direction and is responsible for managing our technical asset development. She has over 20 years of experience in technology as a software developer, speaker, trainer, database administrator and systems engineer.  Prior to her roles as Senior Technical Evangelist and Senior Marketing Manager at Microsoft for over a decade, Susan ran a couple of tech startups, achieved numerous technical certifications and trained thousands of programmers. Susan is passionate about women in tech, analyzing data to produce insights and ensuring alignment between business technology and strategy.

Editorial Director
Manager, Breast Cancer, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), Lymphoma and Prostate Cancer Communities

Thea Burris has been involved in media communications for nearly 20 years, working at several online and print publications, including HealthTalk with Andrew and Esther Schorr. As Patient Power's Editorial Director, she works closely with the management, content and outreach teams to implement the Patient Power voice and to help bring our mission to life. In addition, Thea is the Community Manager of the CLL, Lymphoma and Prostate Cancer Centers, communicating regularly with patients and care partners and producing hundreds of videos every year. She has witnessed firsthand cancer's impact and the importance of advocating for yourself or a loved one to get the best care. Thea's professional interests include "exploring creative and interactive ways to educate and empower patients and their care partners."

Amanda Beard Amanda Beard
Event and Content Assistant

Amanda Beard is new to the Patient Power team but started cultivating versatile media communication skills beginning in high school, and recently graduated from the University of Houston in Clear Lake with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. She has interned for public relations agencies, TV stations, including KHOU 11, and tech start-up companies that have granted her the proficiency to work with different mediums; newspaper, blogging, content writing, social media and production. With her experience, she is helping the team put together events, and assisting with content development and production. Amanda knows from personal experience how cancer touches the lives of nearly everyone and believes patient education and self-advocacy is essential for customizing care and living well. She is excited about the opportunity to help connect patients to our supportive community and the latest research.

Gina Craig Gina Craig
Web Editor and Publisher

Gina Craig is our Web Editor and Publisher, mixing her technical and editorial skills to produce and manage our busy website. Gina's role includes editing transcripts, posting web and event pages, blogs, and distributing e-alerts. She brings extensive background experience as a Content Manager and Web Publisher to Patient Power, skillfully directing her talents toward various technical aspects. Gina earned her BA in English from the University of Washington and honed her talents at The Seattle Times where she discovered a passion for health-related content. This passion, combined with a friend's cancer-related death, is what motivates her to employ her expertise, providing quality educational material for cancer patients and their loved ones. Gina's favorite aspect of being a Patient Power Team Member is "our camaraderie and passion for helping patients and care partners."

Autumn Eadon Autumn Eadon
Logistics Manager

Autumn Eadon is Patient Power's logistical expert. As Logistics Manager, she orchestrates all in-person aspects of Town Meetings, Patient Cafes, and our presence and participation in various national and international medical conferences, nurturing and developing strategic relationships to deliver cutting-edge information to our members. Autumn joined Patient Power in 2012, bringing extensive experience in project management, community management and production. A personal experience with cancer altered her career path, where she discovered her passion for patient advocacy and the need for patient navigators. Autumn successfully combines her varied talents to provide purposeful management and direction in the pursuit of educating patients to live well and survive with cancer.

Tamara Lobban-Jones Tamara Lobban-Jones

Manager, Lung, Myeloma, Pancreatic Cancer and Melanoma Communities

Tamara Lobban-Jones is a producer, interviewer and community manager for our Lung, Pancreatic and Melanoma Cancer Communities. Tamara came to Patient Power in 2007, armed with a background in both Broadcasting and Electronic Communication Arts, and she has since produced over 850 programs with medical experts and patients from around the United States. She enjoys connecting patients to resources to aid them in survivorship, and in this endeavor she has reached out to many patients and care partners to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to cope with cancer. Tamara's professional interests include producing Living Well content, information intended to aid patients and their families as they live and survive with cancer.

Jamie Machala

Jamie Machala
Director of Events
Manager, MPN and NHL Communities

Jamie Machala is Patient Power's Events Director, collaborating with the content and logistics team to help coordinate and plan town meetings and conferences around the world. In this role, Jamie develops and grows relationships with medical centers and partners. In addition, she manages the NHL, MPN and Multiple Myeloma communities, connecting with patients and care partners and producing a steady stream of content. Jamie has the distinction of being the first Patient Power employee, launching the website and producing audio webcasts and weekend radio shows on KVI in Seattle. Jamie's personal and professional focus is on helping others, particularly as it involves healthcare, both behind the scenes and when meeting patients at Patient Power events. She refers to her work as "immensely rewarding," noting the pricelessness of the thank you notes and feedback she has received from patients and care partners over the years."

Ashley Swango Ashley Swango
Production Assistant

Ashley Swango is our production assistant using her marketing and web development skills to build web content, e-alert newsletters, run ROI reports and general assisting. Prior to Patient Power, she was an associate marketing manager for a Fortune 500 I.T. distribution company, a web developer assistant and content writer for a small marketing firm which included creating web content, social media management, online and email advertising, SEO and copywriting. Ashley earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ashley enjoys working in the healthcare field because she finds it very rewarding to see firsthand how support, innovation and information can help people’s lives. Her favorite aspect of being a Patient Power Team Member is “working with a passionate group of people who want to achieve the same goal of serving the cancer community.”

Christine Monaco Christine Monaco
Director of Online Promotions

Christine Monaco brings creativity, imagination and fun to Patient Power as the head of the Online Promotions Team, developing and driving creative projects that attract and help patients while keeping us visible to doctors and advocates. Starting at Patient Power in 2012, Chris used her extensive background in video production, graphics and animation while working in Barcelona, shooting and editing programs in various languages for our European audiences. Having experienced loss to cancer more than once, Chris is dedicated to finding innovative ways to engage our audience, discovering their needs and providing the best experience for them or as she says, "I'm grateful to be able to help cancer patients and their care partners."

Theresa Clementi Theresa Clementi
Promotions Manager

Theresa Clementi joined Patient Power as an intern in 2014, quickly proving her skills in online promotions and social media. Earning her spot on the team after graduating with her BA in Health Communications, she is now our Promotions Manager, applying her writing and listening skills, along with her natural sense of empathy, to her online interactions. Theresa has firsthand understanding of the devastation cancer wreaks on families and firmly believes that "knowledge can be key to healing." Her professional interests reflect this belief. Theresa enjoys reaching out to our various partners, contacts and subscribers keeping them up-to-date on Patient Power's latest events and releases.

Sheryl McIntire Sheryl McIntire
Community Outreach Manager and Patient Advocate

Sheryl McIntire is a veteran patient advocate who learned her skills on the job as a wife and care partner. Following her husband's passing, she earned a master's degree in Healthcare Advocacy from UCLA in order to promote self-advocacy among chronic/terminally patients and their families. Sheryl is our Community Outreach Manager, connecting with patients, advocates and professionals as an ambassador for Patient Power while developing and maintaining ongoing relationships with bloggers, along with writing her own blogs.

“Ruth Ruth Schorr
Logistics and Promotion Coordinator

Ruth Schorr is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in Communications Studies. She is originally from Mercer Island, Washington where her father and mother, Andrew and Esther Schorr, founded Patient Power. Ruth has battled her own chronic illness growing up and truly knows how difficult it is to be a patient as well as a child and friend of someone dealing with cancer. She hopes to leave a lasting impact on the world by helping others live the happiest and healthiest lives possible.

Jack Aiello

Jack Aiello
Host, Myeloma Patient and Advocate

Jack Aiello of San Jose, California is a leading patient-advocate in multiple myeloma. In January of 1995 Jack had a terrible backache. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma through a blood test. Since that time Jack has had stem cell transplants that have brought him to remission, even if only for a short time. Mr. Aiello's spirit remains high and to quote him "I certainly don't want anyone to feel bad for me. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be alive.”

Jeff Folloder

Jeff Folloder
Host, CLL Patient and Advocate

Jeff Folloder, from Houston, Texas, is a husband, father, son, blood cancer survivor and Patient Power host. He is passionate about patient education and connecting with other patients to help them with resources and support for their condition. Jeff was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in 2010 and sought treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He entered a clinical trial at the end of 2011 and now celebrates complete remission. Jeff credits his support team, including family and medical staff, with the hard-earned accomplishment of being cancer free.

Janet Freeman-Daily

Janet Freeman-Daily
Host, Lung Cancer Survivor and Patient Advocate

Janet Freeman-Daily is a 4+ year NSCLC survivor, “kept alive,” as she says, by clinical trials. In her previous career, Janet was an aerospace systems engineer where, among other things, she learned to be a technical translator. She now brings that same experience and science to lung cancer via writing, blogging, public speaking, as well as collaborating with other patients, care partners, advocates, healthcare providers and researchers. Janet is active on social media with her own blogspot, Gray Connections, and is a moderator of #LCSM Chat, promoting ePatient self-advocacy. When asked what her goal is, Janet says, “I intend to keep advocating for lung cancer patients until I’m out of treatment options and energy.”

Dr. Susan Leclair is a Patient Power host with a wealth of experience in healthcare communications. After partnering with Patient Power in 2012, she became very well-respected by our audience through her various discussion on lab tests for patients. Dr. Leclair is a retired chancellor professor in the department of medical laboratory science at the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Leclair is a senior associate at the UMass Center for Molecular Diagnostics. She was a lab professional for more than 40 years and her clinical interests include clinical hematology and oncology, human genetics and bioethics.

“Michele Michele Nadeem-Baker
Video Reports & Communications Consultant

Michele is a results-driven global communications and public affairs leader with senior-level corporate experience and is Patient Power’s PR advisor. She is also a person living with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and was drawn to Patient Power because it has served as a resource for her. Joining the team mid-year in 2015, she brings an extensive background in communication strategies that encompass, among other ventures, various national and international health-related concerns where she has successfully taken a leading role. Michele has extensively represented the American Cancer Society and worked with organizations on medical conditions including various cancers and cardiovascular health—and now draws on her experience as a patient to represent Patient Power to the media and to the public. She received her BA in Economics and Speech Communications from Boston College and went on to earn her MS in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University. Having personally intersected with the cancer community as a CLL patient, Michele has turned her considerable expertise toward helping others effectively navigate the world of treatments, education and coping skills.

Judith Paice

Judith Paice
Host and Cancer Pain Expert

Dr. Judith Paice is Director of the Cancer Pain Program in the Division of Hematology-Oncology and Research Professor of Medicine, Northwestern University; Feinberg School of Medicine. She is also a full member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Paice has served as President of the American Pain Society and Secretary of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Much of Dr Paice’s clinical work has been in the relief of pain associated with cancer and HIV disease. She has traveled widely within the People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Taiwan, Tanzania, Tajikistan and many other countries to educate healthcare professionals regarding cancer pain relief and palliative care. Dr. Paice serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Pain and the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management and is the author of more than 150 scientific manuscripts. She was one of the original consultants in the End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) and has continued serving as a faculty member in this program.

Carol Preston

Carol Preston
Host, CLL Patient and Advocate

Carol Preston is a Patient Power host with over 30 years of experience in communications. She worked as a journalist and talk show host for 25 years. With her interest in medical issues, Carol has worked with scientists and physicians on a wide range of medical conditions including cancer-related treatments, cardiovascular health, metastatic breast cancer and others. Carol received her MS and BS degrees from Syracuse University in New York, and the AP and UPI have honored Carol for her documentary on Holocaust survivors. She has lectured on media at George Washington University and has written Congressional testimony and speeches for C-level executives. Carol served on the board for the organization Bread for the City in Washington, DC for eight years and remains active with the organization.

Moira Quinn

Moira Quinn
Host, Breast Cancer Survivor and Patient Advocate

Moira Quinn is a successful business woman in the media field. Moira is also very active in community affairs, earning the distinction as one of Mecklenburg's 50 Most Influential Women, Media Professional of the Year, and a Community Service Award. She has raised two successful children, is a grandmother, and has her own Powerful Pet, Kory, plus three grand puppies. Moira was diagnosed with stage II with triple-negative breast cancer in 2012. Genetic testing indicated she was negative for the BRCA gene, and she underwent a lumpectomy plus chemo and radiation in 2012, being burned "to a total crisp" as she puts it. Moira found strength and solace in her work, missing only 15 days in the space of a year from her various commitments. As a survivor now, Moira focuses her energy as Committee Chair of the "Cure by Design" event for the ACS and is on the Survivor Advisory Committee for Susan G. Komen as well as the Advisory Board of Carolina Breast Friends. Further, she has helped found and organize the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Support Group, celebrating 100 members strong.

Rebecca Seago-Coyle

Rebecca Seago-Coyle
Host, BRCA-Positive Breast Cancer Patient Advocate

Rebecca Seago-Coyle is an active advocate for breast cancer research. Rebecca began advocating for breast cancer patients and breast cancer research after her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2010 at the age of 35. She underwent a double mastectomy and oophorectomy, followed by systemic treatment. With a strong family history of breast cancer in her family, it has sparked Rebecca to advocate for breast cancer research, specifically for young women who are newly diagnosed. Outside of her advocacy role, she is a wife, project manager, marathon runner, cyclist and yogi. It’s important to Rebecca to inspire others to live a healthy lifestyle. Rebecca is a regular guest contributor as a Patient Power blogger and video host.

Mary Windishar

Mary Windishar
Host and Cancer Caregiver to Husband and Daughter

Mary Windishar is a webcast veteran, having hosted and moderated more than 600 audio or video events. She's specialized in high tech and medical content, and is at her best when acting as a representative of the participant/audience member. This strength comes from years of producing live broadcast television talk shows—including one with Oprah Winfrey at WJZ-TV. Mary's experience also includes years of live training (clients include Cisco and Stanford Medical School,) teaching voice acting in the San Francisco Bay Area and helping found InternetVoiceCoach.com. She holds a BA in Education from Eastern Washington University. Mary’s husband died after fighting colon cancer, and her daughter successfully beat childhood leukemia. She knows what it is like to be a cancer caregiver.

Maria de Bofarull
Global Administrative Assistant

Maria de Bofarull is an expert logistics coordinator and personal assistant to the Schorrs, based in Europe and working globally for Patient Power. She came to Patient Power in December of 2013 armed with a diverse background in finance and tourism, including an education from the University of Barcelona. Maria uses her organizational talents to maintain all of the details associated with navigating the various administrative tasks that keeps us harmoniously coordinated. She is passionate about helping patients. In her own words, “I left the bank because I wanted to feel I was giving back to society. Now I am.”

Teresa Bau

Teresa Bau
European PR Correspondent

Teresa Bau is our European PR Correspondent where she manages expert interviews and media out of Barcelona, Spain. In her spare time, She also writes blogs for Patient Power Europe. Teresa came to Patient Power in February 2014 bringing extensive experience in scientific writing and health-related communication along with a Journalism degree that includes postgraduate studies in medical journalism. She is also multilingual, speaking and writing in Spanish, English and Italian. Empathy is one of Teresa's strengths, and she enjoys working in a global setting that benefits society, or, as Teresa puts it, "I am passionate about health, and I love helping people get educated about their condition so they can have a better quality of life."

Hector Velasco
Videographer, Editor and Graphic Designer

Hector Velasco is Patient Power's multi-talented videographer, editor and sometime graphic designer. With 20 years of experience in the video industry plus his degree in film studies, Hector raises the level of professionalism for which Patient Power's videos are known. Hailing from Spain, Hector has mastered several European languages and, in this capacity, also serves as one of our translators. Hector finds fulfillment in working for a company that is committed to patient education and advocacy. As Hector says, "Understanding how much Patient Power can do for cancer patients has made my work valuable, because it helps people who are in need."
