Malignant Gliomas: Understanding Brain Tumors

To hear the Webcast on 6/18/2008 go to:

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance

According to the National Cancer Institute, malignant glioma is the most common primary brain cancer accounting for over half of all brain cancers diagnosed each year. In light of recent media events, particularly Ted Kennedy’s brain tumor diagnosis, two neurology experts from Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Dr. Daniel Silbergeld and nurse Cynthia Cottle-Bailess, participate in the program to clarify some of the common misconceptions and misunderstandings of brain tumor types, diagnosis and surgical options.

Dr. Silbergeld, is professor of neurological surgery at University of Washington Medical Center, where he specializes in brain tumors located in sensitive areas, with particular focus on gliomas. Dr. Silbergeld expands on everything from brain cancer pathologies to the hope that clinical trials are offering patients. He also elaborates on new technologies on the horizon, targeted drug therapies, vaccine trials, and therapies being pumped directly into the brain called convection-enhanced delivery. Ms. Cottle-Bailess, the clinical coordinator for neurosurgery, help listeners to understand the array of post-operative issues of concern to patients. Will there be swelling? What happens when I get home? Can I take care of my family? Am I going to be the same person after surgery?

Learn what malignant gliomas are, what makes a brain tumor operable or inoperable and what non-surgical options and treatments are being used for malignant gliomas. You’ll also hear about common questions and concerns from patients prior to surgery. For answers to your most pressing questions, listen to this unique webcast focusing on understanding brain tumors with two well-versed Seattle Cancer Care Alliance experts.
