Nicole CarterMother with lupusNicole started having lupus symptoms just after her son was born in 2000. She had severe arthritis, her hair was falling out, and blood tests were off the charts. With a newborn baby, having to work full-time, and her husband gone, managing her lupus took a back seat and got worse. In 2003, Nicole moved to Seattle and got re-married. She then found a wonderful doctor located in Kirkland. He evened out some of her medications, which later got her feeling like herself again. Over the next several years, her flares were close together, but less in intensity as before. In 2006, Nicole moved to North Carolina to be closer to her husband’s two children. Nicole admits her life with lupus has changed a lot, some good and some bad. She can’t walk long distances anymore and anything in the cold is out of the question. She can’t open jars, asking for help has been a huge obstacle for her to overcome. Nicole has come to depend on her husband for things that 10 years ago she wouldn’t have dreamt of letting go. That part of her life improved because of the disease. Nicole has talked to other women about her experiences and helped them find good doctors, deal with the constant pain, and handle the stigma of being a young person with an auto immune disorder.
