Dr. Douglas C. Bauer is Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics, and Director of Research, University of California San Francisco Division of General Internal Medicine. He is also Director of the UCSF Clinical and Translational Resident Research Training Program, Co-Director or UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Pathways to Discovery Program, and an Executive Committee member for the San Francisco Coordinating Center. A graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, he completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and subsequently completed a research fellowship in General Internal Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

Dr. Bauer is a general internist and clinical epidemiologist with active clinical research projects in several areas of aging and osteoporosis research, including risk factors, diagnostic tests, and biochemical determinants of osteoporosis. Dr. Bauer has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on topics related to osteoporosis, including risk factors, diagnostic tests and treatments, and has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international meetings and educational programs. He was a member of the Planning Committee of the NIH Consensus Conference on Osteoporosis, and the Advisory Committee on Biochemical Markers of Bone Turnover of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. He continues to serve as on the NOF Scientific Advisory Committee. Dr. Bauer has served on the NIH Skeletal Biology Development and Disease Study Section and serves as an ad hoc member of the NIH Kidney, Nutrition, Obesity, and Diabetes Epidemiology Study Section (KNOD). He has authored or co-authored 176 peer reviewed publications, serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and is a frequent reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, the Annals of Internal Medicine and the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. Dr. Bauer maintains a general medical practice at UCSF.
