Dr. Jorge Cortes, deputy chair of the leukemia department at MD Anderson Cancer Center, is encouraged that oncologists can focus on the long-term health and wellbeing of their patients, fully expecting most to live a normal lifespan with the disease. Through active dialog with their physician, patients will expect to see the side effects associated with powerful medications managed in a way that allows them to carry on with activities they enjoyed before diagnosis. Dr. Cortes also discusses the standardization of the PCR test, which may help minimize bone-marrow biopsies, and gives us an update on the conversation surrounding treatment cessation.
