ASCO Update: Why Research About Treatment Costs Matters to Patients

We all know that healthcare gets more and more expensive each year. But what's being done about it?  In addition to specializing in head and neck cancers at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), Dr. Bernardo Goulart is researching what is called Patient Centered Outcomes.  This research seeks to help patients, their doctors, insurance companies and the entire healthcare community evaluate specialist visits, drug therapies, screening and prevention interventions for the value they provide to the patient and to the population.  Dr. Goulart suggests that while the insurance industry and providers are thinking about and working on this facet of medicine, patients must also engage; to let everyone know what getting the "best" care means from the patient's point of view.
