You are most likely familiar with the concept of food allergies, but you may not have considered the effect of what you eat on your behavior. Many people have sensitivities to particular substances, which they have learned to adapt to in their everyday life but may make activities, like focusing, much more difficult. On this Patient Power program, host Andrew Schorr is joined by Jan Hersey, director of the Feingold Association, a nonprofit organization that works to show people how to use a dietary program that has been found to be very helpful with various learning, behavior and certain health problems. Judy Simon, a registered dietician at the University of Washington Medical Center also joins the discussion.
During this program, you will learn about the top eight allergies, along with several other groups of substances the Feingold Association focuses on, including synthetic dyes, artificial flavors, synthetic sweeteners and several preservatives. Ms. Simon explains the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act and what it means for you, the consumer. Learn what the colors in your food are actually made of and why some dieticians believe the behaviors associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may be exacerbated by them. Ms. Hersey offers a few examples of easy, natural meals parents can prepare, as well as strategies for ordering in a restaurant if you’re trying to follow the Feingold diet.
Ms. Hersey also shares with listeners a story about her husband, who suffered from tremendous headaches, and eventually discovered how a trace amount of a certain substance in his foods was the culprit. Learn why sugar may be only partially to blame for your children’s hyperactivity and what other substances may be affecting their behavior. Listen now to become more aware of how food additives and substances may be disturbing your daily life.
