Elaine, now 56-years-old, began experiencing debilitating headaches about 9 years ago. The pain at the top of her head was so intense that it became difficult to walk, so Elaine went to the emergency room. A CAT scan, confirmed the diagnosis of a brain tumor and she was in surgery the next day. Elaine shares her perspective on this scary diagnosis, how she chose M. D. Anderson and how she is doing today.
Dr. Yung then joins the program to talk about treatment – he uses Elaine’s treatment as an example, discussing combination therapy using Temodar and Accutane. He speaks about personalized cancer treatment - how no one person’s cancer is the same as the next. Dr. Yung stresses the importance of seeking treatment at a specialized center and one with a multidisciplinary team, like M. D. Anderson. He provides information about the different types of brain tumor, symptoms, diagnostic tests, and addresses treatment using surgery, radiation therapy and other treatment approaches. This information packed program is sure to provide valuable information for those diagnosed with a brain tumor. To quote Dr. Yung “We're trying our best. I think the golden year of brain tumor research and brain tumor therapy is in front of us. I'm very optimistic that we will find a cure or be able to get this tumor under control.”
