Treating Allergies: Runny Nose & Itchy Eyes

PROGRAM DETAILS:

A change in seasons often brings about a new set of allergy symptoms, specifically in the Spring. Allergic rhinitis, characterized by runny nose, itching of the nose and sneezing is quite common. In this Patient Power program on ihealth sponsored by Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Dr. Baiju Malde joins Andrew to discuss seasonal allergies. Dr. Malde specializes in Allergy and Immunology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is instructor of Clinical Medicine in the division of Allergy and Immunology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

Dr. Malde begins with an overview of allergies and allergic rhinitis, including what causes the irritating symptoms associated with allergies. She talks about available treatments, including self-care practices, avoidance behavior, and over-the-counter and prescription medications. Allergies can ebb and flow as one ages, meaning you may experience allergies as a young child but grow out of them in adulthood or vice versa. Asthma and its connection to allergies as well as vasomotor rhinitis are also discussed.

If you have persistent allergy problems, seeing an allergist is highly recommended. Dr. Malde discusses what to expect from a visit, allergy skin tests available and allergy shots. You’ll also hear the answers to listener questions on topics ranging from high blood pressure to medication side effects. The program is a valuable resource for anyone affected by seasonal allergies.
