Recorded on 10/29/2006
SPONSOR
  • UW Medicine
  • Celiac Disease Foundation

PROGRAM DETAILS:

According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, Celiac Disease (CD) is a lifelong autoimmune intestinal disorder, found in individuals who are genetically susceptible. Gluten, a protein found in many foods, specifically grains, is often a trigger for this chronic condition. In this Patient Power program sponsored by the University of Washington Medical Center, Dr. Michael Saunders joins Andrew to discuss ins and outs of this complicated disease. You’ll also hear from Dr. Saunders patient, Shaynee as well as Annette Van Dyke, the mother of a child with Celiac Disease and member of the Celiac Disease Foundation.

The program begins with Annette discussing how she discovered her daughter, Katie, had Celiac Disease. Throughout the program Annette shares her stories pertaining to diets, genetic testing with her family and her involvement with the Celiac Disease Foundation.

Shaynee, Dr. Saunder’s patient, was diagnosed after she gave birth to her first child. Shaynee’s case is subtle and easily controlled through diet. Hear how Shaynee’s other autoimmune conditions affect her disease and how she manages her condition.

Dr. Saunders gives insight into this sometimes confusing condition. He discusses what most often triggers CD, how it is diagnosed and the symptoms associated with the condition. Dr. Saunders compares other GI issues, such as IBS, to Celiac and how one can differentiate the conditions. CD is the most common malabsorptive condition in the United States - so individuals with this disease need to be aware of anemia, weight loss and other nutrient deficiencies in their diet. Dr. Saunders answers many listener questions and gives advice to patients with this condition. If you or someone you know has Celiac Disease, listen to this program to gain knowledge about this condition.
