The Liver Disease Affecting Millions: Hepatitis C

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Hepatitis C is the most common blood borne virus. It affects about 5 million Americans, and approximately 60 percent don't even know they have it. In this Patient Power program sponsored by UW Medicine, Dr. Anne Larson joins Andrew to discuss treatment of hepatitis C. Dr. Larson is Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Hepatology Clinic at the University of Washington Medical Center. Jim Collins also joins the program to share his story of being diagnosed with hepatitis C over ten years ago.

The program begins with Jim talking about being diagnosed through a routine blood test. He tells of the symptoms that he experienced, most notably, fatigue. Jim speaks candidly about how he thinks he contracted the disease, his current treatment regimen, and how he copes with this chronic condition.

Dr. Larson goes on to explain symptoms that are typical of hepatitis C, and addresses the common misconceptions that are associated with this condition. The risk factors for hepatitis C can include IV drug use, blood transfusions or vaccines in other countries, among others. Dr. Larson provides information on the necessary screenings and tests for diagnosis. She shares her knowledge about treatment with the audience and answers a variety of listener questions.
