The Critical Role of Nursing in Your Care

Recorded on 12/10/2006

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Nurses are vital in the care of a patient. How can nurses help you get the best care while you’re in the hospital? Lorie Wild joins Patient Power to give an insider’s answer to this question. Ms. Wild is the Interim Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Patient Care Services at the University of Washington Medical Center.

Patients often feel scared and vulnerable, both emotionally and physically, during a stay in the hospital. In this webcast, Ms. Wild gives you an idea of what to expect and the biggest dangers in a hospital setting to be aware of. She discusses the most common injuries, including falling and hurting yourself, picking up an infection, and medication errors. These accidents can be extremely serious or even fatal, but there are simple ways for you and your nurse to help prevent them. Ms. Wild also talks about what to expect when you go into surgery, the nurses’ role in surgery, and how to prevent surgical errors, either by the doctor or by the nurse.

It can often be frustrating when a nurse doesn’t respond to a call for help right away, or when you don’t understand the treatment you’ve been given. Ms. Wild offers tips on how to ask questions, how to get the attention you need and how to ensure your nurse gets the right message to your physician. Finally, our guest touches on how to handle end of life decisions, and what a nurse’s role is in these difficult situations.

Nurses are there to help. Listen to this webcast to understand how a hospital operates and to hear advice from a seasoned expert. Lorie Wild and Andrew will help you understand how you can take an active role in having a safe experience during a hospital stay.
