Sexual health is an innate part of being human and is intimately related to a person’s overall health. On this episode of Patient Power, host Andrew Schorr is joined by Dr. Ridwan Shabsigh, Director of Urology at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, to discuss several steps men can take to improve their sex lives, as well as their overall health.
We don’t often think of the sexual function in terms of requiring attention to a multiple organ system, which includes the nervous system, vascular system, hormonal system, mental health and physical health. Listen as Dr. Shabsigh addresses how these systems work together to help a man achieve his optimal sexual health. He offers advices from his book, Sensational Sex in Seven Easy Steps: The Proven Plan for Enhancing Your Sexual Function and Achieving Optimal Health. Dr. Shabsigh addresses the barriers that stand in the way of many men seeking out help for sexual dysfunction. Also learn why quitting smoking and weight loss causes an actual biological change to enhance a man’s overall sexual health.
Dr. Shabsigh contends it is what you do with your life more than how long a life you live that influences your sexual health, as illustrated by his story of a 94-year-old male patient who is still enjoying his sexuality. Sexual health requires much more than medicine and this program details many of the different personal health areas a man needs to attune to.
As Dr. Shabsigh says, “It is never too late, whether you are young, whether you are middle aged or you are a senior. Actually, one of the themes of my book is that every man can improve his sex life, and the majority can do so without significant medical intervention.” Overall, this Patient Power program is a wonderful way to begin to understand the comprehensive approach that needs to be taken for a man to attain optimal sexual and overall health.
