Team Transplant: Winning a Second Chance at Life

Recorded on 11/27/2005

PROGRAM DETAILS:

On this special episode of Patient Power, host Andrew Schorr gives a tribute to the University of Washington’s “Team Transplant” - a group of individuals who have had a transplant at the University of Washington (UW). Dr. Jorge Reyes, a transplant surgeon at UW Medical Center, and Alysun Deckert, a nutritionist at UW who organized the transplant runners group, join Andrew as he broadcasts live from the Seattle Marathon. Members of Team Transplant call in to the program to share their stories, even as they run in the marathon. Each recipient shares their experiences in the marathon and receiving the transplant. Ms. Deckert organized the group as a way to help transplant recipients begin a proper exercise program.

Shirley Taylor also joins the program to address the importance of organ donation. Shirley’s 16-year-old son passed away in a bike accident, but his organs made it possible for many others to live. Shirley is a volunteer at Living Legacy Foundation, where she helps promote the education of organ and tissue donation. She explains how to become an organ donor and what an amazing gift it is.

Dr. Reyes describes how the UW transplant team operates, and what types of procedures are performed. He explains how organ failure can develop, what can be done with kidney and liver transplant and the requirements for becoming a living donor.

Listen to this show to learn more about organ transplant from a doctor who describes performing surgery as humbling, and from transplant survivors and donors. Hear inspiring stories as well as facts about donation. One recipient describes her experience at the marathon as, “a celebration of a new life for my donor family and my donor. It’s an extension of his life and I do it in his honor.”
