Stroke: What to look For and Why You Should Act Fast

Recorded on 5/20/2007

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Dr. William Likosky, director of the stroke program at Swedish Neuroscience Institute, has a saying, “Time is Brain.” When it comes to diagnosing a stroke, the importance of moving quickly in order to minimize, or even reverse, the effects cannot be underestimated. There are certain warning signs that can make diagnosing a stroke easier.

Andrew and Dr. Likosky discuss these topics including what a transient ischemic attack (TIA) could mean and the importance of finding a hospital that is stroke smart, as well as being a stroke smart community. Two patients tell their stories of what happened when they suffered a stroke, and the actions they and their doctors at the Swedish Medical Center took to save their lives. Learn about the sequence of events, including CT scans and blood withdraw, that need to happen with a stroke patient in a very timely fashion. Also discussed is what it means to be a stroke certified hospital.

With over 700,000 people per year suffering a stroke, it is imperative for patients to know the risk factors and be knowledge about the symptoms. Several lifestyle issues, from high blood pressure to high cholesterol to tobacco use, can contribute and are discussed. Learn about the different treatment techniques depending on the reason for the stroke. Most important is for a patient to know their genetic history and be informed about stroke risk factors and procedures. This informative interview is a wonderful place to begin.
