Brain cancer is a difficult and scary diagnosis for anyone. However, doctors are using innovative technologies to locate the cancer and help guide an individualized treatment plan. Host Andrew Schorr is joined by Dr. Jason Rockhill, Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC). Dr. Rockhill shares the latest advances in radiation oncology and how these advances are working in conjunction with other modalities to give patients the best chance in fighting brain cancer.
Jill Peterson, a mother of three, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in April 2007. She joins the program to share her inspirational journey, everything from the shock of the initial diagnosis to navigating the numerous resulting treatments. Dr. Rockhill discusses the most modern delivery techniques, from single fraction radiosurgery to multifraction fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy. He also explains external beam radiation and different tools, such as the Gamma Knife, that can be used to administer these treatments.
Dr. Rockhill stresses that although many hospitals may have the most ‘advanced technologies and tools,’ it is crucial that the doctors using these tools are well practiced. Hear how Dr. Rockhill is working with his colleagues in the Department of Pathology and Mathematics to develop a mathematical model for gliomas that could help to predict the rate at which the gliomas will grow and how the radiation changes this. Given the large number of different types of brain tumors, the more individualized the treatment, the better for the patient. Both Jill and Dr. Rockhill address listener questions, including decisions to stop treatment. Jill speaks candidly as to how she evolved to let people help her. Many patients who are very independent and used to taking care of those around them have to learn to let others shoulder some of the burden.
