Osteoporosis is a condition that affects millions of people and could be a public health threat for 44 million Americans, particularly women, as they get older. On this episode of Patient Power, host Andrew Schorr is joined by Dr. Chad Deal, head of the Center for Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease at the Cleveland Clinic to discuss the prevention of osteoporosis, and help listeners understand the treatments.
In osteoporosis, the best treatment is prevention. Listen as Dr. Deal explains the simple activities people can do to prevent and slow bone loss. He gives specific amounts of calcium and vitamin D people should be getting to help prevent fractures later in life. Sun exposure is often a point of controversy, and Dr. Deal offers his thoughts on the amount needed to fulfill the vitamin D requirement. He speaks about healthy lifestyle factors such as not smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight, and participating in weight-bearing activities, to combat the problem. Factors like age and stomach acid influence the amount of vitamins that are necessary and the combination of vitamins that should be taken.
Next the discussion moves to diagnostic tests for osteoporosis, such as Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). Learn how this allows doctors to categorize women into risk groups based on bone density and family history. Dr. Deal discussed the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s recommendations for treatment based on particular T-scores.
When it comes to treatment of low bone mass, there are two classes of medications - anti-resorptive agents and anabolic agents. Learn about the several sub-classes within each of these groups of medicines. Dr. Deal stresses the importance of a through clinical and sometimes lab evaluation because there are certain conditions that might be corrected without some of these drugs. This Patient Power episode highlights an important topic for both younger and older patients to think about because there are numerous steps you can take along the way to minimize your risk of fracture. Then, when appropriate, it is necessary to have a bone density test and begin treatment as quickly as possible to prevent further problems.
