Breast cancer research continues to advance, but simultaneously treatment options become more complicated. On this episode of Patient Power, you’ll learn what neo-adjuvant therapy and dynamic imaging are doing for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Breast cancer specialist, Dr. Jennifer Specht joins Andrew Schorr for a revealing discussion. Dr. Specht is a medical oncologist at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). As a medical oncologist, Dr. Specht's role is to provide patients with state-of-the-art recommendations for their treatment; integrating the best science with the unique needs of each patient. Her patient Janell Sabol can attest to the dedication Dr. Specht has for her patients. She joins this program to share her touching story of being diagnosed with breast cancer in the prime of life.
At just 30-years-old, Janell was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had just given birth to her second child in March of 2006 when she discovered a lump in her left breast while nursing her son. Janell thought eventually the lump would disappear. After going to several different doctors and being told it was just a clogged milk duct, Janelle was referred to a breast specialist at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance for a mammogram. That same day an ultrasound and biopsy were performed and less than a week later Janell was given the devastating news that she had breast cancer. Once she received her diagnosis, things moved rather quickly. Janell and her doctor chose chemotherapy, surgery and then radiation for treatment. Watch Janell's emotional, yet inspiring story here.
Dr. Specht helps listeners understand how PET scans and MRIs are being used to measure treatment progress. You’ll hear Dr. Specht discuss the latest breakthroughs in breast cancer research and its implication for therapy and prognosis. Learn why she is optimistic about the future of breast cancer along with her patient, Janell.
