Long Term Success with Weight Loss Surgery

Recorded on 8/1/2008

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Current estimates put two-thirds of the United States population in the category of overweight or obese. As people search for answers to their weight issues, many people have questions about weight-loss surgery. Am I a candidate? What is involved? How do I pay for it? On this Patient Power program, host Andrew Schorr is joined by Dr. Amir Mehran, director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at UCLA Health System, and together they work to answer patients’ questions.

The UCLA Bariatric Surgery program has an extremely high track record for success with patients, but much of that can be attributed to the high standards required from both the doctors and potential patients. During the program, Dr. Mehran details required lifestyle changes that patients must commitment to prior to surgery, including required preoperative education classes. Dr. Mehran stresses that weight-loss surgery is a powerful tool, but it is not a quick fix. Without personal responsibility, the tool will break.

However, when obese patients choose to make the commitment, Dr. Mehran sites published studies that say bariatric surgery reduces mortality in patients by about 95 percent. There are many types of weight-loss surgery, including the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and staged gastric bypass. Listen as Dr. Mehran discusses what is involved in each surgery and why the doctors at UCLA suggest some surgeries over others. If you or a loved one is considering weight-loss surgery, this program may offer some of the answers you are looking for.
