In what way does being female increase your cancer risk? A look at gynecologic cancers

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Gynecologic cancers, which include ovarian, uterine, cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers, are some of the hardest to diagnosis, and the treatment options often leave women confused as to what is best for them individually. On this episode of Patient Power, host Andrew Schorr is joined by two leading gynecologic oncologists, Dr. Heidi Gray and Dr. Ben Greer, director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Together the two doctors detail red flag symptoms women should be attune to, as well as how women can assess their best treatment options.

You will also meet a 59-year-old patient, Gina, who initially thought she was experiencing the early signs of menopause, but trusting her intuition, pursued it with her doctors and was ultimately diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Otherwise healthy, Gina was told by doctors for over a year not to be concerned about her spotting. Gina shares her powerful story to highlight the importance of listening to your body, getting a second opinion and establishing an open dialogue with your doctor.

An early diagnosis is really the name of game with gynecologic cancers. Hear how testing a woman’s CA-125 level is helpful in leading to an ovarian cancer diagnosis but also other conditions that can lead to an elevated level. When is it important to have an ultrasound, biopsy, and, if necessary, partial and full hysterectomy? How do you decide? Often women are diagnosed with uterine fibroid tumors and ovarian cysts. Listen as Dr. Gray and Dr. Greer answer listener questions about uterine fibroid tumors and cysts, and Dr. Greer delves deeper into the area of ovarian cysts. Why do they appear?
