PROGRAM DETAILS:

Vacations are a time to relax, but what happens when you have a medical emergency while out of town? Joining host Andrew Schorr to answer this question is Susan Holt, a physician’s assistant at Virginia Mason Medical Center who has devoted 20 years of her life to helping people prepare for medical issues when they are traveling. Also joining the program is Andrew’s aunt, Madeline Taft, who was hospitalized while on vacation in Europe.

Madeline Taft started to feel pain on a tour bus in Croatia. She was taken to a hospital, where they diagnosed her with kidney stones. Madeline had travel insurance, but she didn’t have a plan. She describes the experience of being ill in a small village where nobody spoke English and talks about what she would have done differently, looking back.

Ms. Holt talks about what to do when you have a medical emergency while traveling, and what you can do ahead of time to prevent problems. She offers six major steps you can take to prevent illnesses while traveling, including immunizations you should get and general rules of thumb for safety. She also offers suggestions for what steps to take in the event you do get sick while traveling abroad, what precautions you should take before you leave, and specific resources and organizations to contact in the event of an emergency. Ms. Holt also talks about what to do when you become sick while traveling domestically, what medications to bring, and whether it’s safe to travel while pregnant.

Listen to this program to find out what you need to know before you go out of town to ensure you get the best medical care. Get tips from an expert who has heard about all kinds of medical issues that can arise.
