PROGRAM DETAILS:

Pediatric asthma, a chronic disease that affects the airways of the lungs, can be a terrifying condition for both children and their parents. Getting the proper treatment and having a plan in place are critical to keeping this serious condition at bay. On this Patient Power program sponsored by UW Medicine, learn about how a child is diagnosed with asthma, what treatments are available and how to help your children with this serious, but manageable, condition. To address these questions are two pediatricians from the UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinic in the Kent/Des Moines area of Washington, Dr. Matthew Blessing and Dr. Doreen Kiss.

During the program, you will meet 8-year-old Drake, an avid athlete who suffers from moderate-to-severe asthma. Drake’s mother, Yvonne, also joins the conversation and shares her experience, as well as strategies she uses with both of her children to keep their asthma under control. Many children who have asthma are not diagnosed. Dr. Kiss speaks to this problem and the types of symptoms parents need to watch for in their children. With pediatric asthma, a lot of the responsibility is placed on the parent to manage the condition and decide when it has become an emergency. Dr. Kish offers parents guidance when evaluating a situation and doing what is best for the child.

Dr. Blessing then goes on to discuss different methods of treatment, including both steroid and non-steroid controller medicines. Hear about some of the hidden triggers of asthma and how to identify if what causes the attacks. Can a child outgrow asthma? Should you encourage your child to participate in sports? Is asthma worsened by weight gain? Learn the answers to all these questions and more on this Patient Power program.
