Breaking News on Stem Cell and Spinal Cord Injury: A New Era of Medicine

PROGRAM DETAILS:

The FDA recently approved the first clinical trial using human embryonic stem cells, which now appear safe enough to use on humans. What does this mean for patients with spinal cord injuries? Soon, a handful of patients with severe spinal cord injuries will be eligible for injections of specialized nerve cells designed to enable electrical signals to travel between the brain and the rest of the body. When this news broke, Andrew Schorr connected with renowned expert, Dr. David Chen from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, to get his thoughts on the new information. Patrick, a patient who has lived with a spinal cord injury for over 25 years, also joined this special program.

Patrick, President of the Board of Directors of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, begins by talking about how he has followed research over many years. He’s excited about the advancements being made, but most importantly he’s interested in improving quality of life for those with spinal cord injuries.

Dr. Chen talks about the latest news and what the future holds. In his own words “While this certainly now opens the potential for treatments, at least the investigation of treatments for spinal cord injuries and potentially other medical conditions, it will not be tomorrow or next month.” To learn more about this news, and Patrick’s situation, listen to this informative breaking news program.
