An Expert View on the Risk of Multiple Births

Recorded on 1/28/2009

PROGRAM DETAILS:

After news broke that a Los Angeles woman gave birth to eight, initially healthy, babies, concern was expressed in the medical community as to general public awareness regarding the dangers that multiple births present for both the babies and the mother. In this Patient Power breaking news segment, host Andrew Schorr is joined by Dr. Thomas Benedetti, Vice-Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, who helps to shed some light on the issue.

During the interview, Dr. Benedetti speaks to two of the biggest problems for typical mothers resulting from multiple gestations: the development of a syndrome called preeclampsia and the risk of hemorrhage. The discussion then moves to artificial reproductive technologies and some of problems associated with improper monitoring. Dr. Benedetti then discusses some of the possible side effects for babies resulting from multiple gestations, which range from physical to developmental issues. While there is hope none of the eight babies born in Los Angeles will suffer from these syndromes, it is important for patients to be aware of the risks associated with these types of events.
