Each year the flu strikes many individuals across the United States, making them miserable for an extended period and sometimes even causing death. But what if a strain of flu became a pandemic that we’re not prepared for? This Patient Power program discusses the Avian (Bird) Flu, but focuses mostly on preparation and prevention of the flu virus should a rare strain hit the country. Joining Andrew is Dr. Anne Marie Kimball, Professor of Health Services and Epidemiology at University of Washington Medical Center and John Rennie, Editor in Chief of Scientific American Magazine.

The program begins with a general discussion of flu pandemic and a description of what ‘flu’ means. Topics include the various strains and viruses that are spread, sometimes from country to country. Both Mr. Rennie and Dr. Kimball help listeners to understand why this threat causes a strong need for concern. They speak about how flu outbreaks can affect a country and a population.

Dr. Kimball stresses the need for preparedness and prevention as a country. Both she and Mr. Rennie provide tips and resources for making sure that you protect yourself from this sometimes deadly virus.
