Multiple Myeloma Specialist Robert Orlowski, M.D. joins Andrew to answer patients’ questions about the newest developments in myeloma, particularly with regards to the latest drug therapies and ideas about stem cell transplants, both for the newly-diagnosed and relapsed patient.
Dr. Orlowski, section head in multiple myeloma at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, covers several subject areas in this dense and highly detailed interview. These topic include: Developments for patients who might not be transplant candidates; Pre-transplant induction therapy; Maintenance therapies; Developments in the relapsed and refractory setting; Controlling side effects; Deciding about a transplant; and the newest drug combinations, especially with Velcade and Revlimid.
Dr. Orlowski explains that myeloma is not just one disease but a combination of several different diseases, and based on the cytogenetic profile, patients may have a disease that can behave differently. He contends patients need to have routine cytogenetics in addition to the standard tests because certain cytogenetic abnormalities may lead to myeloma and be the foundation for more targeted therapies. The number of drugs available to myeloma patients is increasing, and the modeling systems for evaluating drugs and their efficacy against multiple myeloma are improving. This translates to more effective drugs and numerous more options for patients to explore in finding a treatment plan that aggressively fights the disease and allows the patient to maintain a high quality of life.
Andrew and Dr. Orlowski tackle several questions in this hour-long interview to give myeloma patients an idea of the current state of the disease and where the research is headed.
