ASCO 2007: Reports from the latest meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Each year experts from around the world gather at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting to present the latest research findings related to cancer. This authoritative discussion about the highlights from ASCO includes: Dr. Julie Gralow, a breast cancer expert; Dr. Tony Back, a colorectal cancer expert; Dr. Evan Yu, a prostate cancer expert; and Dr. Renato Martins, a lung cancer expert.

The main theme to emerge from the meeting is the need to treat cancer as a heterogeneous disease and apply targeted therapies. The doctors explain how we, as healthcare consumers, should view the research findings. More treatment options are becoming available to patients, including several new agents such as bevacizumab or Avastin. Learn how this new drug works, and how it is being incorporated into different cancer treatment regimes, for different types of cancer. Some studies showed that simply adding extra drugs, or higher doses that may have a higher toxicity, are not getting better overall response rates in patients. The ‘failed’ studies are sometimes more important in terms of education than the ‘successful’ ones.

Dr. Yu explains how prostate cancer is beginning to be treated more as a chronic disease and the role oral platinum agents may play. He also touches on a few study results for patients with metastatic advanced bladder cancer and testicular cancer. Promising research pertaining to prevention, earlier-detection and new and more targeted treatment regimes in breast, colorectal and lung cancers are touched on by Dr. Gralow, Dr. Back and Dr. Martins.
