The diagnosis of any kind of brain tumor, malignant or not, is a serious diagnosis. For this episode of Patient Power, sponsored by Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Dr. James Chandler will discuss the latest treatments, particularly surgical approaches and new research. Dr. Chandler is surgical director of the Neuro-Oncology program in the department of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, co-director of Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute and associate professor of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
Dr. Chandler begins by talking about both malignant and nonmalignant brain tumors and how experts decide whether there is a need for surgery. He talks about the factors that are considered when making the decision, such as neurocognitive function that may be affected even if the tumor is benign. Dr. Chandler speaks highly of the multidisciplinary team at Northwestern that consists of pathologists, radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and a whole myriad of others that interpret your diagnosis and treatment modalities.
He goes on to speak about current research being done and how technology is advancing the field. Dr. Chandler is not only a knowledgeable expert, he’s inspired by the progress being made. He praises the Brain Tumor Institute, what it is and what it will accomplish. To quote Dr. Chandler: “And the spirit of our institute is there is hope, we're aggressively facing the challenge, we're going to give you the best care that medicine has to offer, and the rest is in God's hands.”
