There are many prostate cancer treatment choices available today that enable a high quality of life during and after treatment. This Patient Power program includes a discussion of robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, proton therapy and other methods used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Learn more about hormone therapy, radiation, targeted therapy, clinical trials for prostate cancer and why the future is promising for men with prostate cancer.
Two prostate cancer survivors, each treated at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, speak candidly about their different experiences while being treated. Sam had a high PSA that led to his diagnosis. He participated in a clinical trial and today leads a normal lifestyle. Joseph, a 66-year old survivor, had symptoms that were masked by his diabetes, urinary and circulatory issues. His wife convinced him to get a prostate cancer check at an M. D. Anderson awareness program and, through that check-up, he was referred to a urologist. He then saw Dr. Kuban, was treated with hormone therapy, and he too is living well today with a nondetectable PSA level.
You’ll also hear from two leading experts as they join Andrew to discuss Prostate Cancer. Dr. Deborah Kuban, professor of radiation oncology, explains exactly what prostate specific antigen (PSA) is and why it’s important in the detection of prostate cancer. She discusses the importance of technology and how doctors are able to target treatment to each patient’s tumor. Dr. John Ward, a urologist and surgical oncologist, talks about advances in the treatment of prostate cancer using both robotic surgery and the advances in radiation therapy with the aid of computers. Learn about progress being made in drug therapy and why the clinical trials and research taking place at M. D. Anderson are important for the future.
