Advances in the Treatment of Kidney Cancer

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Over 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with kidney cancer every year. In this episode of Patient Power sponsored by The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Christopher Wood joins Andrew to discuss advances in treatment, including new drugs and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Wood is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology and Cancer Biology at M. D. Anderson. Also joining the program is a kidney cancer survivor, and patient of Dr. Woods’, William.

The program begins with Bill telling his story of being diagnosed after going to the doctor for persistent back pain. Through a recommendation from his wife’s doctor, Bill went to M. D. Anderson. You’ll hear all about his story, the confidence he had in his medical team both during and after treatment and how he’s doing now.

Dr. Wood details symptoms associated with kidney cancer and how it is usually diagnosed when testing for other problems - most kidney tumors are present without symptoms. He talks about the risk factors associated with kidney cancer, including smoking and genetics. Dr. Wood then discusses treatment, which often involves surgery – many times the new minimally invasive approaches. Minimally invasive procedures help reduce scarring, pain and recovery time. You’ll also learn about the new drug therapies used to treat kidney cancer.

In addition to providing a thoughtful overview of kidney cancer, Dr. Wood answers a variety of listener questions ranging from clinical trials to treatment side effects. To close, both Bill and Dr. Wood share their outlook for the future of this cancer. If you or someone you know has been affected by kidney cancer, this program is sure to provide you with plenty of promising insight.
