Bladder cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the United States, with as many as 60,000 cases diagnosed annually. Thankfully, new therapies and minimally invasive surgical techniques are showing promising results. This Patient Power program sponsored by The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center features Dr. Colin Dinney, Chairman of Urology and Professor of both Urology and Cancer Biology at M.D. Anderson. Dr. Dinney joins Andrew to discuss the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer. Dr. Dinney’s patient, Tom, also participates to share his story.
In March of 2004, Tom began experiencing blood in his urine, a symptom of bladder cancer. Upon diagnosis, he knew he wanted to be treated at M. D. Anderson. He tells of his journey to M. D. Anderson, his treatment along the way and the relationship the he developed with Dr. Dinney. You’ll hear how Tom is doing now and how he is teaming with Dr. Dinney’s wife, Jane, to further research.
Dr. Dinney begins by explaining the symptoms of bladder cancer, how it’s diagnosed, and risk factors, stressing that smoking is the biggest risk factor. He also talks about the role of genetics in bladder cancer. He details the various approaches to treatment, including the importance of a multidisciplinary team, and what can be done to lower the risk of recurrence. Dr. Dinney answers listener questions concerning Oncovite, schistosomiasis and bladder control after surgery. You’ll also learn about advances in research at M. D.
