Andrew Schorr:
Stroke is the nation's third leading cause of death, but it's also preventable. Coming up, a leading neurologist from Northwestern Memorial Hospital will discuss the warnings signs of stroke and how you can prevent stroke. We'll also hear from a young woman who had a stroke but fortunately now is doing great. It's all next on Patient Power.
Hello and welcome to Patient Power sponsored by Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I'm Andrew Schorr. One of the scariest acute conditions is stroke. That is when there is a clot that's formed in your brain, that's cutting off blood supply. If you don't get care fast you'll die, and as a matter of fact stroke is America's third leading cause of death. But it's also the number one cause of disability. If they can help you but not as fast as we'd like, then you may be left with disability, and I'm sure we've all seen people like that who are just trying to get their speech back, their mobility back. Sometimes it does not come back all the way and they're disabled.
We don't want that to happen to you so in this Patient Power program we're going to talk about what you can do to prevent stroke. We're also going to talk about how you get the best care, the fastest care, the best trained care like what they do at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and other certified centers around the country so that you can have the best chance of a full recovery and certainly avoiding death.
