Sarcoma is a rare but troubling cancer. While many exciting advances have been made, much more research must be done to improve treatment options for sarcoma patients. On this episode of Patient Power, hear from world-renowned specialists in the field, who give information about what research has been done and what more needs to happen. Joining host Andrew Schorr is Dr. Chappie Conrad, a world-renowned sarcoma expert who is Co-Vice-Chair of the Orthopedic Service at the University of Washington Medical Center, as well as Dr. Douglas Hawkins, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle. Also sharing their stories on this program are Jared Holmes, a 3-and-a-half-year sarcoma survivor, and Melissa Hill, who lost her child to sarcoma.
Sarcoma is a malignancy of the connective tissue. Symptoms generally include feeling a mass somewhere in your body. Dr. Conrad and Dr. Hawkins discuss survival rates, treatment methods, and how new imaging techniques and other new technologies are improving treatment. They also explain how genetic mutations like the P53 gene might come into play, and why it’s so important to pinpoint exactly which subtype of sarcoma you have.
Jared first noticed a mass in his arm at the age of 16. He explains all the stages of his treatment, which included chemotherapy and surgery to remove a mass from his elbow. Both Jared and Melissa are active with sarcoma advocacy groups, which help to fund research initiatives and provide financial and emotional support to sarcoma sufferers. Ms. Hill discusses the importance of connecting with advocacy groups and specialists to ensure that you or your child receives the best care available.
Sarcoma doctors and patients agree that we need better drugs to fight this disease. Listen to this show to find out how best to go about talking to your doctors to receive the best possible treatment, as well as how to advocate for new and improved technologies.
