Brain Cancer can be a devastating diagnosis. Thankfully, the researchers and experts at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center are working with innovative technology. This Patient Power webcast features Dr. Jeffrey Weinberg, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center as he discusses BrainSUITE. BrainSUITE is an integrated neurosurgery system that allows for more precise treatment of complicated tumors in sensitive areas of the brain. The goal of this surgical technique is to take the most tumor possible without harming nearby brain structure. Dr. Weinberg provides a detailed explanation of how BrainSUITE acts as a GPS system in the brain for surgeons using updated MRIs during surgery.
Dr. Weinberg’s patient, Dean, participates in the interview and tells of his experiences at M. D. Anderson. Last year Dean began having spells where he would ‘zone out’ in the middle of conversations. When his wife and boss both began to notice, Dean sought treatment. After an MRI with his primary care physician showed a suspicious area, he was quickly referred to a neurologist. Dean scheduled an appointment at M. D. Anderson a week later. After being operated on by Dr. Weinberg using BrainSUITE, Dean was back to work in ten days. Dean speaks highly of Dr. Weinberg and his experiences at M. D. Anderson.
The Brain Tumor Center at M. D. Anderson allows patients with brain tumors to receive multidisciplinary care from a team that includes neuro-oncologists, neurosurgeons, neuropathologists, and neuroradiologists. All of the specialties under one roof allow for clinical practice and research to take place in one setting, improving the future for the treatment of brain cancer.
