<itunes:summary>Patient Power, founded by Andrew Schorr, is dedicated to helping you and your loved ones connect with leading medical experts. Gain the knowledge needed to make smart choices about your health through our extensive library of programs</itunes:summary>

Patient Power is a service of Patient Power, LLC, based in Seattle and founded by two health communications pioneers, Andrew and Esther Schorr. They previously founded HealthTalk, a leader in support for people with chronic illnesses and cancer. Patient Power is devoted to helping you and your family through knowledge, to get the best medicine and return to good health. Andrew lived that. In 1996 through a routine blood test he was diagnosed with a leukemia. By reaching out to other patients and connecting with doctors who specialize in his illness he participated in a clinical trial, received "tomorrow's medicine today" and now, 9 years after diagnosis, remains in deep remission and takes no medicines. While Andrew's success won't be everyone's story, he is committed to helping each person he touches approach their illness in a way that gives them the best chance of good health: getting smart about their diagnosis, seeking out the best healthcare providers, getting second and even third opinions on what approach to take, and drawing on others for support. Patient Power is built on Andrew's two weekly radio programs, one nationally syndicated and one in Seattle. They can be heard live on the Web and past programs can be found on the Program Replay Library page. Be sure to listen and check out Andrew's Blog to comment or ask questions. He is not a doctor but can help you follow the Patient Power principles to be in better control of your own health and healthcare. Financial support for this effort comes from Andrew and Esther's own funds and sponsors who we appreciate but have no editorial control. Patient Power is not selling anything and has no agenda other than to help you feel better and be as healthy as you can be. The opinions expressed on this site and in the radio programs are Andrew's, his guests, or from callers like you. They do not necessarily reflect the opinions of our sponsors nor any outside organization. Please consult your own doctor for medical advice that is most appropriate for you.

<itunes:subtitle>Macular Degeneration and the Latest in Eye Care</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Macular Degeneration and the Latest in Eye Care</itunes:summary>

As we age, preserving independence and continuing to do the things we love can greatly depend on good eye health. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of central vision loss or blindness in people over fifty, and it is the number two reason, second only to Alzheimer’s disease, for why people end up in nursing homes. Joining Andrew Schorr on this episode of Patient Power to discuss the exciting new developments in the treatment and management of macular degeneration is Dr. Russell Van Gelder, chairman of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington Medical Center, University of Washington School of Medicine.

Dr. Van Gelder begins his discussion with a basic overview of how the eye functions. This allows him to offer a more in-depth description of what is actually happening to an eye with macular degeneration, which comes in both a dry and wet form. Together, Andrew and Dr. Van Gelder define the differences between the two forms. About 90 percent of cases are dry macular degeneration, for which there is no specific treatment. Dr. Van Gelder discusses how to manage the disease and keep it from progressing to the more serious form, wet macular degeneration. Experts still do not understand what causes this degenerative eye disease on the most basic level, but there has been tremendous progress in recent years in the area of treatment. Dr. Van Gelder describes some of the older therapies used in the past and the newer drug and surgical treatments that replace them today, as well as preventative measures to preserve the vision you have for as long as possible. This includes a discussion of the three recently FDA approved treatments– Lucentis, Macugen and Photodynamic Therapy – for the wet form of macular degeneration, as well as vitamin regimens that have been shown to help in the management of the disease.

Patient John McMannus, a vibrant grandfather and former pilot, shares his story of developing macular degeneration and receiving Lucentis, which involves an injection in the eye. Dr. Van Gelder contends it is imperative for patients to monitor their eyes and see an eye care professional if they sense any changes in their vision. Learn how Mr. McMannus uses an Amsler grid to help him do this. Dr. Van Gelder goes on to answer questions from Patient Power listeners, which leads to a discussion on clinical trials and new drug combinations that may improve treatment and outcomes for patients in the future. With all of the recent progress in treatment, macular degeneration patients can have hope of restored vision and an improved quality of life. With people living longer, the incidence of eye problems is increasing, and Dr. Van Gelder stresses the importance of on-going support in eye care research to ensure better treatments can be developed. Overall, an informative and inspiring program with a wealth of information for maintaining eye health as you age.

<itunes:subtitle>Correcting Your Vision: Advice and Opinions from an Eye Surgeon</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Correcting Your Vision: Advice and Opinions from an Eye Surgeon</itunes:summary>

What is Laser Eye Surgery? Is it right for you? How long has this surgery been around, and is it safe? Dr. Mark Walker, a refractive eye surgeon, joins Andrew to answer these all-too-important questions and other concerns when correcting vision. Dr. Walker is Chief of Surgery for Restore Vision Centers and is the only surgeon in the Pacific Northwest with the advanced academic accomplishment of a "Fellowship in Refractive Surgery" certification who is dedicated solely to LASIK surgery.

Dr. Walker begins by telling listeners about the history of vision correction surgery and how it has evolved. He discusses the different types of surgical techniques used, such as LASIK with an "I", LASEK with an "E", PRK, wavefront and custom LASIK. He explains what these procedures are and the benefits to the recipient. Dr. Walker also addresses important points when choosing a surgeon. With so many advertisements about this surgery, patients must consider a surgeon?s experience, complication rates and the type of technology being used. He says ? I would just encourage patients to look at this surgery as they would any other surgery and treat it, how would you react if you were having heart surgery or an appendectomy, and would you solely base it on price? Do your research.?

Complications in surgery are often a fear for many patients. Dr. Walker speaks about the possibility of infection and dry eye but also stresses that these are minor complications. You will hear about the latest advances in laser surgery and the many benefits available in the future. If you or someone you know is considering a vision correction procedure, this program provides the answers to many of the most common questions.
