Sandra B.
An avid athlete, forty-two-year-old Sandra B. begin to experience difficulty running and felt as though she had lost her stamina. She experienced other symptoms--including jaw muscle fatigue--which could not be explained. After six months and many diagnostic procedures, Sandra was diagnosed with cardiac amyloidosis and multiple myeloma. She began treatment with Velcade and dexamethasone twice a week and responded very well to the regimen, experiencing few side effects. Sandra decided to collect stem cells and continue on her current chemotherapy. The collection went well and she remains on Velcade/dex (initially via IV but now subcutaneously). Sandra believes that people need to play an active role and advocate for themselves to get the best care. She has found online and in-person support groups that have been very helpful and says that her new friends "form a new family...and the exchange of information and the 'right' kind of support has been phenomenal.” Sandra, now 45, lives in Seattle with her husband and two children.
