Michael Abecassis, M.D., M.B.A.
Dr. Abecassis is chief of the division of Organ Transplantation and medical director of the kidney and liver transplant programs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and professor of Surgery and Microbiology-Immunology and the J. Roscoe Miller Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He is actively involved in training medical students, residents and fellows. A member of Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, Dr. Abecassis is board certified in surgery. In addition to his clinical and teaching activities, he is the principal investigator and a member of the steering committee of the Adult-to-Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation Cohort Study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This seven-year study will provide much-needed data on living donor liver transplantation. In addition, Dr. Abecassis is the principal investigator and a member of the steering committee for the NIH-funded Clinical Trials in Organ Transplantation Study. This five-year study will investigate molecular markers in the blood and serum that predict and accurately diagnose rejection and ischemia/reperfusion injury of transplanted organs. Dr. Abecassis also is a member of various local, regional and national committees on organ procurement, distribution and allocation and is a member and officer of many national and international professional transplantation and surgical societies.
