Julie Kelly
Adult Living with PKU

Julie Kelly is an adult with Classical PKU and has two brothers, one with PKU who currently lives in Washington D.C. and is in Law School and the other one without PKU lives in Colorado and is working on his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. Julie and her brothers grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and were a part of about 20 people that had (or were treated) with PKU at the time. The PKU care was sparse in New Mexico and they were seen by an endocrinologist for the majority of their youth because there wasn’t a PKU doctor in New Mexico.

Their parents did an outstanding job of getting information, new research and food for the children at a time when information was scarce. They were able to attend maternal PKU camps and other medical conferences. Julie and her Mom also helped start a small PKU organization in NM in order to get a law passed to get formula covered for low income families and maternal PKU women. Julie now lives in Illinois with great PKU medical care and information, formula coverage from the state and a very large PKU community that she is actively involved in. She works at a commercial architecture firm and loves her job. Julie is recently engaged and will be married in October in October of 2009.
