Dr. Leventhal is a surgeon on the medical staff at Northwestern Memorial and associate professor of Surgery and director of the Living Donor Renal Transplant Program at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. A member of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, Dr. Leventhal is board certified in surgery and is responsible for launching the Living Donor Renal Transplant Program. Since 1997, surgeons in the program have performed close to 1,000 minimally invasive living donor operations, making it one of the most active programs in the country. Dr. Leventhal's clinical interests include kidney and pancreas transplantation, as well as vascular access for patients requiring hemodialysis. He applies novel methods to expand living donor kidney transplantation, such as cross-match and blood group-incompatible transplants. Dr. Leventhal's research activities include basic investigation into the use of regulatory T cells for prevention of transplant rejection, as well as translational research examining the mechanisms underlying the development of anti-donor antibodies. Dr. Leventhal is a member of many national and international professional transplantation and surgical societies.
