Center for Infectious Diseases in the Centers for Molecular Medicine
Dr. Benach is Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases in the Centers for Molecular Medicine, and Chair of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. In 1984, Dr. Benach made the landmark discovery of the organism that causes Lyme disease. His career has focused on the area of vector-borne diseases, and particularly in the pathogenesis of spirochetal infections. He is a past Fulbright Scholar and a member of the Advisory Allergy and Infectious Diseases Council of the National Institutes of Health. Recently, Dr. Benach and his colleagues at the Center have begun to investigate organisms that could be used for bioterrorism attacks.
