Jennifer Herlihy
In 1997, Jennifer Herlihy started experiencing pain in the abdomen and was extremely fatigued. After many tests, and 6 months later, she was diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis. Doctors told her that it was a slow progressing disease and that she could be fine for 20 years or could need transplant in 5 years. In 2002, she found herself in need of a transplant and joined the wait list. In April of 2003, she got the call and went in for a liver transplant. At the end of her hospital stay Alysun Deckert, a registered dietitian, stopped by her room to talk to her about nutrition. As she was leaving she told Jennifer about Team Transplant, a program to promote fitness and organ donation awareness that trains for marathons in the Seattle Area. Jennifer describes hearing about the program as a ‘beacon of light’ when she was feeling her weakest during recovery. She began training in August and walked her first half marathon in November, just 7 months after transplant. Jennifer describes Team Transplant as “an amazing support group of people who have been through the experience.”
