Hope Bourne
Hope Bourne is a 31-year-old 911 dispatcher from Seattle. At her 20-week ultrasound, a large mass was found in her baby’s chest. She was referred to UW Medicine Health System and Dr. Edith Cheng, as her pregnancy was now considered high risk. Hope received a high-resolution ultrasound and echocardiogram, which showed that the mass was obstructing and shifting baby’s heart. Her son was diagnosed with Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation (CPAM). From there, mother and baby were monitored regularly, tracking the growth of the mass. At 31 weeks, the mass doubled in size in a two week period and at 39 weeks, Dr. Cheng induced labor. Roan was born two days later, with 20 doctors and nurses in attendance. He was born breathing on his own and doing better than anyone expected. After surgery at 4-1/2 months old, Roan is thriving, along with his parents Hope and Christopher.
